saaaame same same same. Cat's reaction was the only part that even kind of got to me, otherwise... well, people died. it sucked, but... yeah. didn't care too much.

Personally I was surprised I had a reaction at all, since I a. knew the books and b. didn't like Robb or Talisa in the television show very much.

But I pretty much felt sorry for all involved. Cat was the worst of it all though, for sure.

I'm the same. The Starks have never been my favorite characters, but I do like Cat. And her reaction really got to me. I care nothing at all for Rob and frequently actively dislike him, so I didn't care one way or another about his death. Cat's emotions there, though, where powerful. Her actress just stole that scene completely.

Unfortunately, they really shortchanged Catelyn in the Red Wedding. I still can't believe we didn't get Cat clawing her own face off and screaming "Ned loves my hair!" To me that was what made the RW so heartbreaking and disturbing. I guess the showrunners thought people would care more about Talisa and little Ned. *eyeroll*

So hammy and over-the-top with trying to be tragic that it's ridiculous. The term comes from an ep of Six Feet Under where a character had a stroke and was trying to say, "My arm is numb," but it came out as "Numb arm! Num-arm! NARM!" and it was meant to be this horrible emotional moment, but it ended up being too much.

If this is responses on tumblr then I'd say it's mostly hyperbole because internet and feels, but in real life? I dunno I don't think I've met anyone who actually cried over it(my mum rage-quit the books because Robb and Cat were her favourites but still no crying, just anger), their deaths sucked yes but it wasn't any sadder than a lot of the other deaths in this series.

Michelle Fairley was fantastic portraying Cat's final moments. She was dead before the knife even touched her throat. Chills, man.

That said, I've heard of many people who felt like you, me included (I heard vague spoilers and going knowing that multiple characters would die, I was mainly relieved it wasn't Arya, or Tyrion, or Sansa, or Dany, or ...-) Yes, seeing Cat's grief was heartbreaking and Robb's and Talisa's deaths were shocking and brutal, but overall, they were not the most essential characters.

I think the reason why the Red Wedding has such an impact for many people is the suddenness of it, most readers/viewers don't see it coming, and that you see characters die that you don't expect to die this abruptly (kinda like when Ned dies in the beginning). Like the Starks or not, but they're the "good guys", they are easy to root for, and seeing them get unceremoniously slaughtered like that is scarring. Most expect a character like Robb to somehow go out heroically during a battle or something, not like he does at the RW. That what makes it such a gut punch.

Sorry for the rambling, but I think the Red Wedding is a great bit of writing, both in the build-up and the execution.

Everything you've said is pretty much on point. I don't think it'd be unexpected for Robb to die, but the manner in which Robb died is a pretty big shock. Especially when you take into account that in universe it's considered particularly horrible to murder people when they are your guests and should be protected by that society's rules.

I think a lot of television viewers were just shocked, regardless of how they felt about the characters.

Same, OP. I liked the build up to it in the book, and I thought it was a pretty good "WOAH THERE" moment when I heard what they did to Robb, but otherwise... yeah, Cat was what drove and made that scene, especially in the show. Her actress nailed it, and the rest of it was just kind of lackluster?

Even Robb's death and the unborn-baby stabbing were just kind of meh moments that didn't have much gravity for some reason.

It didn't help that Robb and Talisa were terrible in the show and all the others were background characters.

But yeah, even in the book, Cat's meltdown is what got me the most. Though I also felt really sorry for Dacey and the others. And Grey Wind.

i didn't particularly care about robb in the books and outright disliked him in the series, so it was cat's pain that got to me as well

The death that got to me was the wolf. For everyone else, by the time I had gotten there in the books I was just sorta "oh gee, more people are dying, well Rob was being an idiot, no surprises there."

I felt no major connection to either Cat or Robb, and I knew it was coming, and what comes after, so it didn't and doesn't bother me much.

The bits that got to me the most about the Red Wedding were relatively small, I guess. The moment The Rains of Castamere started playing was excellently done. I knew it was coming, but at the onset of the melody I was still like "Oh nooooooooo...". That and Grey Wind being killed. Seeing his eyes close like that ... :c

Pretty much I really got from the Red Wedding was a completely unexpected "Stupid sexy Bolton..." moment. 8|
