It's over here, everyone!
Okay, first things first; a few years ago, a brand-new university was built on a large plot of land beside a few power lines that form the national grid (what is land use?). This university had everything: A gigantic library, a plethora of courses, an entire shopping street to cater the students, etc., etc…
But what it didn’t have was a social culture as everything there was just so new and shiny. So, ever since it has opened the place has been both home and host to some of the biggest events of the surrounding neighbourhoods like concerts and blood donation drives. Today, they just had their first art fair and as an esteemed student at this prestigious temple of higher learning I felt that it is my duty to educate the rest of the world in what we do and how things are done in blah blah blah…
Yeah… no, I only went there just to buy a DIY painting kit that I first saw on the internet but I did took some photos of the place while I searched for the place where it was sold!
Also, the art fair first started on Wednesday and ended just yesterday for those of you who are wondering “where the heck are the crowds in all those photos!?”
This is the main “shopping street” of the art fair and it is located on the second floor corridor beside the main auditorium. Well, in a manner of speaking it is less of a corridor and more of a giant thoroughfare in which students from the dorms would walk to their classes and lectures, making it a hotspot for stalls and students. Also, that roof overhead is higher than it looks in the photo.
The stalls were mostly occupied with men and women selling jewellery, gizmos, knick-knacks (as in, tiny metal pocketwatches that actually tell the time) but there were several stalls selling food and drink and there was even several –I think American, judging from their accent– students selling some Texas Barbecue food as a treat!
At the very end of the row of stalls there was a large art corner where for about RM 80 Ringgit (about 25.68 US Dollars) you are given a set of painting tools and for two hours, paint on an empty canvas and have that painting be shown for the world to see. I didn’t stay long enough to ask whether or not you can take your painting back home but given that there was no one around that was carrying a painted canvas home I reckon you can’t.
There was also a small pottery service nearby where for RM 100 Ringgit you can make your own clay pot with some help from the experts and the students. Given that I distinctly remember a small crowd gathering around the service I reckon that it was –from sight– more popular than the next-door art corner. Sadly though, I was short on time so I didn’t take any photographs of the service.
At a nearby distance from the pottery service and the art corner there was this stall that was selling these GIGANTIC movie poster prints for a sum of RM 35 (11.23 Dollars) and there was a large crowd surrounding these things just looking at them. To give you a comparison, that black bag that was strewn over the posters in the second picture was about the size of a laptop cover case, so these things were huge!
Sadly though, they didn’t have any anime posters, or Phineas and Ferb ones, or Homestuck, or Touhou, but I did ruffle through their entire catalogue just to see what they got. There was also a phone cover stall nearby the place that I sadly did not photograph. It had quite a substantial amount of One Piece phone covers for the interested. Unfortunately though, I’m not a fan of One Piece.
And this is the registration centre of the fair where students can be asked for a number of fair-related things, like… um… uhh…
Okay, I didn’t actually visit the registration centre. I just took this photo because that tree thing on the back looks cool, and maybe because of the cigarette sculpture too.
It may not look much from this angle, but I think you can see the two red shapes inside the wire mesh of the cigarette. This thing was built both as a sculpture and as a warning to what cigarettes can do to our health.
Now, beneath the gigantic second floor thoroughfare above there was a sort of under-corridor where most of the sculptures of the art fair were located. I didn’t have time to picture all of them but I think I have captured enough to make an overall impression of the art fair. Also, by this point I have already bought my DIY painting kit and back then my main priority was to just get back home before Friday prayer starts; hence, the few photos of the sculptures of the art fair.
Before I continue though, I would like to say that each and every single one of these sculptures was made using either, recyclable, reusable or biodegradable material. I hope the garbage system doesn’t clog up with all of these materials once the fair is over.
This was among the first sculptures I saw after leaving the registration kiosk. The large arrow was painted over with images of a person’s life from birth to death, but I have absolutely no clue as to what was hanging in the birdcages. I liked the sunflowers though, but I guess it was a blessing in disguise that I didn’t ask whether or not they can be sold… and that my wallet is empty of cash.
Lots of paintings about the Petronas Towers here! Again, thank God I didn’t ask whether or not are they for sale, although considering that there were student’s names nearby the paintings I’m guessing they’re not.
For the uninitiated, the Petronas Towers are twin skyscrapers that were built in the 1990s by the national oil company Petronas and watched over by our fourth Prime Minister who really wanted an icon to show the world that SE-Asia is not a backward region. It succeeded. Mostly…
…What... is that?
OH MY GOD.
HOLY.
NO.
NO!
NONONONONONONONO!!! NO!!!
What IS that!? It looks like a cross between the Uncanny Valley and Slenderwoman!! I still can’t believe I actually took this thing, because I am pretty sure that those eyes and faces that were made up of magazine cut outs is going to haunt my dreams. O_O
Quick! Turn to something that’s happier!!
Ahh, that’s more like it.
Nothing much to say here except that I WANT THAT WHITE BRANCH ONE.
Also, now that I’ve thought about it, what will happen to these paintings after the fair is over? Do the students just take their paintings back home or will they hand them over to their lecturers? And after that, where would they go?
I have no idea what this is or what is it supposed to represent. The only thought that ran through my mind while taking this was “Maybe someone at F!S can answer what it is?”
And finally…
WARNING! : SNAKE
MISHAGUJI! IT’S MISHAGUJI!! IT’S FREAKIN’ MISHAGUJI!!!
An obscure game reference aside, this snake was one of the biggest highlights of the art fair for me; I was smiling like a lunatic the whole time I took this photo. Made out of plastic bottle tubes, I seriously applaud the students who took the time and dedication to make this thing work simply because stringing up LED lights through the snake’s body must’ve been a tough order (I should say the same for most of the exhibits but right now I’m just flailing over this one because of its resemblance to Mishaguji).
This sculpture was placed right next to the snake and all I can say to it is that it looks perfectly stunning, especially with the paintings right next to it.
Speaking of which…
HOW MUCH DOES THIS COST? BECAUSE I WANT IT. NOW.
And lastly, to wrap up the whole thing…
Umm…
I know this is based on traffic lights and stopping your vehicle when there are pedestrians crossing the road, but in my book this was the weirdest sculpture of all the sculptures in the art fair, discounting the creepy Slenderwoman thing up above; that thing wins all the trophies in the freaky department.
Anyway, once that was done, I decided to head back for home, do my Friday prayers, and finally open up what I had bought.
I had my first DIY painting experience when I saw a stall in the local shopping mall selling some of them over the weekend a few months back. Interested, I decided to buy a kit and my now first painting now
proudlyhangs on my bedroom wall opposite my window. I bought a second much smaller kit a few weeks back when I realised that I could try and paint my favourite characters on canvas by using the lines from the original picture, ending up witha painting of one of my pairings. So this is my third (and largest) kit I have bought yet and I was super psyched about painting it until…
Ya Tuhan.
Yikes.
So now I’m postponing my painting until today in which I could finally start fresh from being tired from the previous day. If you are wondering about the pencil marks and horn shapes on the girl and boy, that is because… I’m going to paint them… as one of my pairings.
I ship them. I ship them so hard…So that’s it! I hope you enjoyed what I had shown you and I hope you all have a nice day! :D

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:24 am (UTC)(link)After looking at all that art, I get the desire to paint. Which is a really bad idea, since I'm awful at it. XD

(Thank you! I often feel that my posts are seen by outsiders as nothing more than attention grabbing and there have been several times when I doubted myself in doing this, so thank you so much for reading through it all!
Ramadhan is coming up soon and if it's possible I may make another post at the end of next month, but I am not promising anything! ).

If it is a giant lamp, then what was with the branches?
Re: OP
The branches are ~~art~~.

I'm actually going to enroll myself there as a Foundation student next month and I really hope that I could make some new friends there once everything has settled down.

Re: It's over here, everyone!
The exhibition isn't that awesome. I'm pretty sure you Westerners can crop up much better displays and sculptures than ours since this is our first art exhibition after all.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 02:53 am (UTC)(link)Scrolling scrolling thinking about how all these look cool and art fair-y...(that roof looks plenty high to me and it goes higher?!)
Shame you can't take the 2 hour portraits home, maybe they could go pick them up later? A cool idea though - the pottery also sounds cool.
big posters :O
the tree does look cool
Petronas Towers paintings are also cool
I too like the white tree one :)
Maybe it's a carboard light tower? Looks cool, if made of stone it'd look good at night in a yard in a modern tree of light way
AH THE BUTTERFLY ONE!!!!!
Re: It's over here, everyone!
So true with the 2 hour portraits. I often wonder what would happen to them once the art fair is over.
As for the cardboard tower, I still have no idea what it actually is. If it's a giant lamp, then what's with the branches on top of it?
And the butterfly painting is beautiful, isn't it?
Thanks for commenting!
