homestucks have already been there, and most of the drama i've seen comes from people whining about the impending homestuck crisis, SA users who are stuck back in 1997, and trans* wank

Details, please. What prompted that will effect my desire to check out the anime when it comes out...

While trying to minimize spoilers, there's one character who presents as a girl, with a skirt and everything. After that character is killed (which happens to a fair few characters due to the premise), it eventually comes out that bodily, at least, they were male. That's spawned endless debates in the fandom about whether the character was transgendered or just crossdressing.

(For what it's worth, my opinion is that he was crossdressing -- there's some evidence in the reasons we got for him doing it -- but it's not totally impossible to construct a reasonable argument in favor of transgenderism. But the fandom can get kind of vicious about defending whichever side they picked.)

it's basically what the other anon said, though to elaborate on the wank, it tends to be about the handling of the reveal (because popular japanese media pretty much sucks with gender issues of any kind, not the US is great) which bleeds into the fans not only arguing about the canon possibilities, but also about about the validity of headcanons

the main source of drama i've seen stems from the rare individuals who insist that the character is trans* in canon and anyone who misgenders them is a terrible person; while on the other side you get people who insist that trans* headcanons and interpretations are stupid and delusional because canon!

second verse same as the first, but there's tons of great non-wanky fanworks and love for the character too, with a variety of respectful interpretations

the LP for the first game with the character is up on something awful and it's been complete for awhile now, and they're pretty well underway with the second game as well
