smartphone data question

does downloading apps use up data if your wifi is turned on? I'm at home on my wifi right now and want to download some apps, but I don't know if it wastes data. this is my first iphone/smartphone so I don't really know anything!

No.

Well, make sure your data is not on. But simply getting onto someone' WiFi isn't going to run your data up.

Usually it won't but it could if the wi-fi signal is weak or overloaded. Most phones have an option to override supplementing poor wi-fi with data. I don't know if it's on by default or not, though, and I don't remember how to change it for iPhones or how to do it on Android :/

If you're connected to wifi it should be using wifi instead of 3g data.

Most smartphones will prioritise using wifi over 3G. If you want to completely force it not to use data, turn off your mobile data, or get an app like JuiceDefender (Idk if there's an Apple equivalent, sorry!) that controls that for you automatically to save battery.

ARE YOU ME? I don't remember posting this.

I just got my iPhone two weeks ago and I can't figure out how the data works. It seems like my data is getting used even when I'm at home where I should be on Wifi. I don't know what's going on.
