It's not pathetic to try to pull yourself out of depression and have a better life. Who cares what OP held on to to keep living-- the point is that they did it. I don't think that they should necessarily tell him if they do meet him, but, y'know what? Human brains are weird, sometimes they just get stuck on one thing for no good reason, and if it happens to help turn your life around, that's awesome.
