I definitely agree with your last comment and think that has a huge part in it, but I'm not sure I agree with the "no impact on society" comment. I think it actually has a positive impact. I know of many, many people who had limited to no exposure to LGBT issues before getting involved with slash who now are very strong advocates for equal rights as well as equal media representation. The more people in vocal political and financial support of such issues, the more likely things will change someday. (For that matter, there are also many people who come to terms with their own sexuality through fan works.)

Absolutely fans who are homophobic when it comes to Real Life Gays should be called out, but in my experience they are few and far between. And I certainly am not implying that slash fans should get any or any more credit than other people working towards equality, but to dismiss their role entirely is also inaccurate.

that's a good point too, and i guess i was thinking more along the lines of no 'negative' impact on society, because you're right

in the way you've said, i also feel like slash fandom has also helped in the video game industry, by creating a larger and socially aware market who are interested in lgbtq narratives, but has not really stolen the focus away from queer representation
