I had terrible, terrible dysmenorrhea when I was a teenager -I almost flunked out of high school because I missed so much. Then I had a kid and now I have "normal" PMS, and no, not every other lady deals with it. Anyone who tells you that is wrong and a jerk. If it's your doctor, find a new one. My mom got me birth control without telling my dad eventually, and at the time there was no reason I couldn't stay on it forever, I can't imagine it's changed so much now. Your body is malfunctioning, and it's not your fault, and it doesn't make you weak. If your pancreas was screwed up, you'd be on insulin. If your kidneys were screwed up, you'd be on dialysis. And if your penis was screwed up, you'd get Viagra. This is no different.
And once you've got this straightened out -and there is one or a combination of treatments that will work, once you find the right doctor and stick with it- you will discover that you've been strong and brave all along. You will be able to be a hero and have adventures, because the universe forced you into this rather sucky one. I hope your next one is better.

I had totally never thought of those correlations before. So many points. Especially after the penis one. Soooo many points.

"Birth control" can be such a misnomer. But then, people didn't acknowledge the fact that period pain, let alone PMS, was a thing until a drug company figured out it could market pain pills to women who would buy them regularly for decades.

I swear to god, if men had periods nobody would have to suffer with not being taken seriously. The amount of times I was told that vomiting and passing out from pain was 'part of being a woman'....

Speaking of "every other lady deals with it", I don't get period pain at all. No cramps. Just a bit of emotional ennui the first day.

I do sometimes, untreated, get baaad insomnia and mood swings when I'm pre-menstruating, and I suspect my chronic illness is tied to my hormones in some way, but before the illness, I was fine.

Naturopaths can be helpful, I wouldn't go to them for cancer, but they can deal quite well with systemic imbalances the Western medical profession is less clued in about. They helped me, and I'm naturally skeptical so I doubt it was a placebo. I take Vitex agnus-castus aka chaste tree now, it's demonstrably effective for me.

I've heard some really good things about traditional Chinese medicine too, for those more subtle hard-to-find-the-cause problems. As a complement to the mainstream health profession it can be worth doing.

I go to student clinics to save money, sometimes free, the quality of care is high because the supervisors help and everything is up to date.
