British PhDs - help?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Long story short, I've found out about a PhD studentship at a British university which sounds like it's right up my ally, and I would love a crack at it.

The thing is, I'm not British and for that reason my soon to be finished master's degree is not British either... would I even be in a position to apply? I have no experience with and only a cursory understanding of the British educational system (I've never heard the term "PhD studentship" before, so all my knowledge stems from Google), and I have no clue if it's a pipe dream or not. Is there anyone around who knows the British system and who can tell me if I should even start looking into it or not?

I don't actually know anything about PhDs but I suspect a lot of the answers will depend on where you are currently. Immigration from outside the EU is pretty tough under any circumtances and I believe foreign students are required to prove they have sufficient savings for living expenses on top of the applicable fees prior to arriving. So even though I would suspect your educational situation would be fine there might be other hurdles to overcome.

The simple answer would probably be to contact the university offering the place and ask them what the criteria are for overseas applicants.

Yeah, definitely look into it. If your MA is accredited, it should be acceptable. Honestly the best thing you can do though is just send an e-mail to the people in charge of the problem to ask for more information.
