I'm offended on your behalf!
To begin with, not all women go through the same symptoms of menstruation, and even if they all suffered horribly through it, it doesn't mean that they (and you) don't deserve understanding and compassion. What kind of twisted thinking is that?!
So don't believe those people, OP.
As for possible solutions, is self-employment an option? That way you can decide your own hours.
Also, if the way things are now you can barely function, is the alternative of the patches so bad? I mean, worst-case scenario, they make you feel worse, so you quit them. Maybe taking pills or another form of birth control will make the symptoms better, or maybe it won't, but it sounds like it's worth a shot.
Also, the characters in your picture would not be disappointed or ashamed or you. You are plenty brave already! Inner struggles and physical pain are no less hard then battles against fantastical beasts. Heck, you could say the struggles of the self are harder to overcome than external struggles.
OP, this is a cliché, but hang in there and don't give up. Keep looking at every possible solution! And don't let people's stupidity let you down. Most of the time they really don't know any better.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 10:30 am (UTC)(link)Patronizin - definitely. Sexist and patriarchal? Not necessarily. I've had lot of self proclaimed feminists tell me "You're period is a wonderful, empowering beautiful thing and you should embrace it as a sign of your superior womynhood" - shit like that. I really wanted to punch their teeth in.
