I'm probably going to sound stupid but... what are 'Very Special Episodes'? Is this slang for something, or an actual media term?

Well, it's become an actual media term, named after their promos' tendency to go "tonight, on a very special episode of _____"

They're pretty much sitcom or kids' show episodes that address some kind of serious or relevant "issue" like drugs, alcohol, abuse, anorexia, racism, teen sex or pregnancy, deaths of friends or relatives, family problems, etc, that are meant to be educational. Or sometimes just episodes that are just unusually serious in nature.

Check out http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VerySpecialEpisode for a better explanation and examples.
