Context: Riku is only a couple days away from unveiling that he's become a massive Darkness Dick. Kairi has gotten the vibe that he's different and it's not enough to put her off completely but yeah, she's no longer eager to be on a wild adventure depending on him. Considering how big a Darkness Dick Riku is in the first game, I think this is a pretty smart caution for anyone to have.

Also if the ocean adventure really was a "high probability of never seeing Riku again", all three of them are ice cold for doing this to their families and their other friends. But they're kids and I doubt they really think it's forever and ever.

At the end of KH2, Kairi is the one who helps Sora see that it's Riku in front of him. I'm curious if they'll ever explore if there'd been awkwardness concerning her having backed off from him, but I'm pretty sure she does like him.

hi my name is tealdeer

It's a smart caution, but in the overall context of things, it also felt like a convenient one as far as the storytelling goes. Since even if Kairi can sense something about Riku, it still feels off that she'd outright suggest to abandon him like that--Which is mostly why I interpret it the way I do, since it makes more internal sense to me than Square justifying something like that as a reasonable and completely decent suggestion probably because princess.

I suppose it doesn't help that I'm tired of Square's formula for mmf love triangles setting up the other male in the equation as an antagonist. It just especially falls flat in my eyes when it's injected into a trio of childhood friends the way it was here.

But they're kids and I doubt they really think it's forever and ever.

Actually, the fact that they're kids is what makes me think it's especially dickish. You're right, there's the prospect of return: it's not leaving forever, it's striking out on their own to explore the world! Excitement, adventure! Coming of age themes! Hooray for personal growth and individuation, etc!

Which is why I think that cutting a friend and comrade out of that and leaving them behind tends to carry far different implications and weight than separating from family.

The KH2 thing is a good point, and I guess rather than not liking him, it felt to me like their bond just wasn't all that strong. In-game it feels like they could probably do without each other if Sora wasn't there connecting them.

That's an interesting thought too about Kairi's reaction to Riku, but I have a feeling the moment is probably just done and gone. Although if they do develop Riku's relationship friendship with Kairi in KH3, I do hope they address something to that effect. The whole kidnapping and siding with evil thing does have to put some strain on a relationship.

Also I feel I should say that I don't hate Kairi or anything, so I apologize if it came off as just trying to poke at her character. This isn't meant to be malicious.

your name is inconsistency.

You just flip-flopped logic in the middle there. It's not malicious, it's flimsy.
