I'm a doctor (used to be ob/gyn, now emergency medicine) and have also had dysmenorrhoea. I swear by the Mirena coil (the intrauterine device that secretes a small amount of progesterone) - it changed my life, and I recommend it to patients too. Some people think you can't have it unless you've had children, but that's not the case - I don't have children and have had the Mirena for 7 years now (it gets replaced after 5 years). True, it's a little harder to insert if you've never given birth, but it's perfectly possible. And the good thing about it is that the hormones mostly act locally on the uterus, rather than going into the bloodstream, so there are fewer side effects.
I don't have a Dreamwidth account, but I'm forest_rose on livejournal - happy to chat on there if you want :-)

I was really interesting in the Mirena thing because it sounded good, but I did hear that not having children can cause you to have severe pain while you are on it and since I already deal with pain it seemed a bit silly to even consider it, and it sounded like it made a lot of people's periods worse instead of making them better, but I really don't know much about birth control so maybe that is a rare occurrence. I was really hoping to find a birth control that's low dose and would stop my periods almost if not completely since just the thought of having a period upsets me greatly.

I know a LOT of people on the Mirena who don't have children and do not have pain issues from it. This is sorta one of the myths that fly around about Mirena and Paraguard (which would not help you as it is hormone-free), that you need to have children. Also, you are thinking of the Paraguard for making periods worse. :)

I would also consider the NuvaRing over the patch, as the patch actually has very high hormone levels. NuvaRing or Mirena would be my suggestions, if you can afford them. I would also suggest the vagina-related health community [community profile] vaginapagina, which is more active in its LJ version but does have people watching on DW.
