Japan's idea of friendship is far different than the west's. If you look at it with a more cultural perspective, it doesn't become anything special. Riku and Sora are nothing more but characters that show their creator's intent. Enix didn't intend for this to be homosexual context, there for it isn't. It's fine to see it in a fanon sort of way, but it's not actually there.

Oh don't pull that cultural relativism bullshit on me.

Anyway, it's either clear that you didn't actually read my comment (I don't blame you, it was long and boring), or I was hopelessly unclear. I don't particularly care which, but I just hope you're not trolling. Because if you are, that's a really petty ax to grind.

Oh my god, I like Sora x Riku as much as the next fangirl but SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Seriously, canonically there is nothing but friendship between them. No matter how hard you try to make it into something else, it will never happen.

It's delusional people like you that give the rest of us a bad name -_-

Re: da

Yes, I'm delusional. That's why I've written paragraphs admitting that there's nothing meant to be romantic between sora/riku in canon and never will be, and why I admitted that canonically Sora and Kairi are clearly meant to have strong feelings for each other.

This isn't some essay about a shipping grudge. It's an explanation of why I at least continue to point to that moment as part of why I and other fans I've known feel that it can be interpreted as the culmination of a lot of different emotions between Sora and Riku, and why some of us don't feel that the writing successfully creates the same emotional charge between Sora and Kairi.

To clarify, I wasn't the anon who originally replied to sootyowl. My reply to the other anon wasn't even meant to contradict them, so much as explain why people might feel that way about Sora's reaction to Riku vs. what we get on-screen of him with Kairi.

Apparently I've failed in that.

*That's why I've been admitting

Way to be melodramatic, self.

Is this Curseangel in disguise? Cause that argument up there sounds SO MUCH like her Kirk/Spock rants. Wouldn't surprise me in the least.

not YOU anon, just questioning the OTHER anon who is so hell bent on convincing people that Riku/Sora is canon.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2013-06-17 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Really, the only thing I'm hellbent on is explaining myself.

I wasn't the anon who made the assertion that Sora sobbing at Riku's feet was an objective, canon sign that he loved Riku more than Kairi (or that he loved Riku at all). I merely regretfully butted in.

Anyway, I re-read my second post and I can see now where it would seem like I was trying to argue with canon. That was definitely not my intent.

From the start of my interjection, I had just meant to talk about why a lot of people do find Sora's friendship with Riku more compelling than what he has in-game with Kairi, and how certain things about the canon do _subjectively_ contribute to it, along with why I think it's so common for people to still talk about the reunion scene like it's some romantic lock-in for Riku's "good end" or something. It was never meant to prove or even imply the ship was actually canon in any sense of the word. Just that there's a lot you can reasonably draw from canon for it, without desperate misinterpretation and misunderstanding--even though some people get carried away.

It's all pretty stupid, I realize. But it's why I got defensive when the other anon came along and acted like I was saying "NO, SORA AND RIKU ARE CANON, THE BEACH SCENE IS PROOF, XION LIED!" because I really don't think anything I said the first time around came close to implying anything like that.

Well, whatever. Sorry for the miscommunication, I guess. Even on anon my mind likes to tie itself in knots, so I know I end up submitting things before I should. I don't intend to drag this out further in any case.
