I thought they were cute together. Wasn't their romance suppose to be cheesy and over the top?

Of course, to each their own.

What is the pic used in the OP from?

The Vicar of Dibley :) It's a great comedy show.

tyvm I never would have recognized it otherwise !

(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I was thinking that looked like Dawn French. Cool!

Vicar of Dibley

The whole SHOW is supposed to be cheesy and over the top. I'm not even a big fan of his but I got the point of those episodes. It's cute fluff, something is giggle at and flail about with. It's not supposed to be something where he delivers explosive lines and punches you in the gut with feeling.

IDK what OP thought s/he were watching but they missed the point by miles.

I have no idea what this is. But Richard's hair looks silly.

Vicar of Dibley, you can watch the episode on youtube, it's quite funny.

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2013-06-16 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It's because they project themselves on Dawn French's character and Richard is basically playing himself (or the persona he presents to his fans).

(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes I was just going to say the same.

He doesn't really matter in himself, she just needed that love interest to make the end of the story sweet. I have to admit I've never noticed his acting in it, seems OK to me. I don't really know him from anything though, so not much to compare it to!

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2013-06-16 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
He plays Thorin in The Hobbit. He's OK in this (does what the show requires him to do - provide a shy version of prince charming), but he was clearly amused by Dawn too and if we were taking this seriously, one might say he breaks character.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Could it be because he's not playing his broody/tortured/evil typecast for once?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-17 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Haha! "Oh no, he's being sweet. Like really sweet -- BAD ACTING ALERT!!"

I think he, um, did the depth of the character justice.

I do like the show, and his 2 (?) episodes are as cheesy as a deliciously cheesy cheesecake. But let's not pretend there was more to his part that a charming smile and some adorkable jumpers.

[Picture is Richard Armitage interpreting Harry Kennedy in the British TV situational comedy show "The Vicar of Dibley". He is indoors and either holding or dipping a woman in a playful and romantic manner.]

I HATED him in this. I can't stand to rewatch it, his acting is a lot worse than it is in anything else.

s!b everyone else loves it and thinks Harry is perfect

He's not really a character much? Like, he's just there to be handsome and desirable and nice, and he fits the bill?

Like, what I most like about the Geraldine/Harry relationship is that it's INCREDIBLY RARE (if not non-existent) to see an unapologetically fat woman in a relationship with an incredibly (conventionally) attractive man, where he's shown to actively desire her. And so for me, having an actor who I find attractive in that role was an even better thing.

But like, it's just supposed to be sweet and over-the-top and a little silly? So I'm not sure how amazing you were expecting his acting to be, it's pretty much on the level of the rest of the show.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-17 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, if you're watching the episode for Harry/Armitage? You're really doing it wrong. This isn't the Richard Armitage Show, it's a long running show with its own mythology gags and quirks and he's coming in for a double Christmas episode to tie up some lose ends so that Gerry gets her happily ever after. It makes no sense to come into this one episode for the Armitage and with no history of the show and expect brilliance. He's the straight man in the episode and the stranger and not the one you should be there for. (I send people who have just discovered Armitage his episodes of Spooks and North & South and Robin Hood happily, but tell them they need way more context for this one.)

ILU for this. So much. ♥♥♥♥

(Anonymous) 2013-06-17 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
This. Harry's not there to be a complex character, he's there to be funny and adorable and to have floppy hair. I thought he did a fine job of it, and especially loved how much playful humor and chemistry he and Geraldine had. That's wonderful to see in ANY onscreen romance, but it was even more awesome because nobody ever acts like Geraldine's unworthy of love and happiness and sexytimes because she's overweight.

On the contrary, the night before her wedding half the village shows up on her doorstep for a last minute elopement. :)

Killed me. I laughed so hard during these episodes.
