Before I wrote anything with sex in it, I did a bit of reading to try and learn the proper anatomy. (I remember starting a forum thread called "How do I not end up on Weepingcock?") I learned pretty quickly that a lot of young writers proposed sex acts that weren't even possible, so in my stories, I referenced and dismissed myths like cervical penetration, multiple male orgasms . . .

. . . and deep-throating. It wasn't until years later that I found out that was actually a thing, and I still have trouble wrapping my head around it, so to speak.

I...don't understand why deep-throating is a difficult concept? You just have to angle your head/throat in a certain way (and learn how to suppress your gag reflex). I mean, shit, you know that people swallow swords, right? Why wouldn't they also be able to swallow a penis?

Sorry about that. That wasn't my intention.

I suppose I could find the crud at AO3, but to be fair, a lot of the crud is at ff.net. It's just easier for me to find the worst there. I'm sure it's not yours, though.

That's actually a good idea, OP. Maybe I should try doing that to get my confidence in writing back up.

Most fic on FF.net is pretty bad, so it shouldn't be hard to find stuff.

I have a few fan fics bookmarked here that are just really bad. I read them whenever I feel discouraged about my own writing.

Reading stories that I view as lower quality than my own just makes me feel petty, though I can understand why it makes you feel better.

Maybe it's weird, but when I'm feeling down the only thing that makes me feel better about my writing seems to be reading stories that I actually thought were good. Not mine, but it still inspires me and just makes me want to go create.

Sometimes I wonder about this, when I see that someone has favorited one of my stories, but everything else they favorited is from a different (rival?) pairing.

I do this too. But only to one or two people, who suck more because of their crappy grasp of how people act, the characters they're writing about, their reliance on spellcheck, and their creepy rape = love, babies = forgiveness, if it ain't violent it ain't r*pe thing.
Also one of them consistently misspells "thighs" as "tights" so unless y'all are doing that, it's not you.
