Assassin's Creed Question

Do you need to play the other games to "get it?" I'm interested in Assassin's Creed 3 largely for the setting (Revolutionary Boston! Whoo!) but it'd be annoying to not know what's going on story-wise.

The modern day plot won't make much sense without background information, but it makes only a little bit more sense with background information, and it's only a very small part of the game. The majority of the game is set in the Revolutionary war era and doesn't really require any previous knowledge other than knowing the Assassins and Templars are enemies, which is covered in the prologue sequence of the game.

As long you don't mind a fairly vague intro segment, then you shouldn't need to. It covers the bare bones of what's going on so you won't be too confused. That said, some parts of the story do lose some emotional impact but only because you're [probably] not as attached to the character as you might be otherwise.

tl;dr: It's a little bare bones, but it gives you the info you need to 'get it'.

Yeah, what the others said - but the modern day plot is pretty fucking stupid anyway, so you can just play through it fast and ignore it while you go back to skinning bears and killing Brits.
