NAYRT. Agreed that every nation has done something awful somewhere, but I am not my country, and the sins of the father don't pass to the son. If I support said "awful things", then yes, I bear some responsibility. Otherwise, it depends on how I live MY life and what I do to others.

DA: Yes, but I think you're (and others in this thread) missing the point. OP didn't say they felt responsible. People do have prejudiced notions about other countries and sometimes people feel ashamed because they think once they say they're X people will think of Y, Z and W because of their origin.

In some places, saying where I'm from makes people think of prostitutes and criminals. So it's not something I'm proud to shout in the streets.

SA. Okay, yes, then I guess I was missing the point. I was thinking more of the concept of a collective guilt, which I don't agree with. But I can see what you're saying, where the correlation might be uncomfortable.

If everyone is ashamed, then there's no particular reason to dwell on being ashamed to be from one country in particular. There's got to be more to the OP's shame than a general understanding that there are probably some skeletons in the closet.
