Croatia is an European country, most (if not all) European countries have done some pretty awful stuff throughout the years, which means every European country have something to be ashamed of, be it historical or more recent.

The Germans have WW2, The Danish have among other things the fact that they let the Germans wander through Denmark during WW2, The Brits have the whole Empire thing going on, The Baltics have a bad rep today and so on.

As I am most familiar with Europe, and Croatia is an European country last time I checked, I used Europe as the example instead of The World or whatnot

And to make it completely clear, I do not agree with this in any way shape and form, but that does not stop me from knowing about it. Or from hearing the debates in my News Sources.

A lot of non-European countries have also done some pretty awful stuff, and are still doing it; even to their own citizens, in many cases.

Yeah, I'd say it's more important nowadays to stop shit that is going on RIGHT NOW instead of dwelling on past shit (which doesn't mean the incidents in the past should be forgotten).

na

I think it's weird to be ashamed of being born in country XY. It's not like you can choose in which country you're raised in.
I don't get patriotism either for the same reasons.

I think it's most healthy to see the bad and good things that came/come out of your country and be able to critisize what's going on in your country without getting too self-destructive. Sadly I don't know many people who are balanced like this.

I live in a country where it's either extreme patriotism (to the point of loking down on other countries for not being "as awesome") or extreme loathing and self-hate.

I think what the person above is trying to get at is a sense of cultural legacy that gets instilled into national and personal identity. From what little I remember, there's been a lot of violent turmoil in Croatia's very recent past, with more than a few human rights violations.

So for the OP it could be guilt, something to do with their country's international reputation, or just having felt no special reason to feel proud of their identity as a Croation till now. Lots of things.
