I think TV Tropes, as a community, has way too much of a hangup about gratuitous sex. It doesn't manifest in the typical "people insist something's crap because it has gratuitous sex," but what they instead do is insist any work that isn't crap includes sex to build character or advance the plot, even when it could do so with half as much sex in half as much detail.
Action series, even well-written ones, can include fights just for the sake of fighting. Can't we take the same attitude towards sex scenes?
BS1: I don't actually like the sex scenes in Never Mind the Gap. I just don't think the art style's attractive.
BS2: Spoiler territory, but does anyone else think the themes render the ending twist completely irrelevant?
