While having tons of fanworks is definitely better than none at all...
I find that I prefer it when there's not too many fanworks of my favourite characters/ships.
Because for some reasons I feel "obliged" to check them all out, or at least anything that doesn't look 100% crap at first sight, which can quickly become overwhelming and burns me out on the particular character/ship.
