2 - I honestly had no real interest in the game either; aside from "that Cloud and Sephiroth thing" that I heard vague things about, I knew jack about FFVII.
But then when I saw the trailers for the movie, I was hooked -- it looked so cool. And it is -- visually, it's much more appealing. Plotwise, though... well, it's kinda hard to understand without the background of the game, and you really can't expect an hour and a half movie to develop the characters as much as 80-some odd hours of gameplay do. Even so, though, the movie was got me into the fandom in the first place, and it gave me the impetus to play the game, so I have a wee bit of a soft spot for it.

Bottom line: Nope, it doesn't make you lame at all. At least you've had the experience of both to be able to say as much.
