What is this? It looks beautiful.

Riven, an old video game.

The Myst series. You might call it a fascinating exercise in storytelling with as little character interaction as possible, just introducing the player to characters and societies and then showing what they left behind. I call it a long progression of unexplained puzzles where I couldn't even tell what I was supposed to do until I'd done it.

I was gonna say Isle of Skye with an overgrown pompom growing on it.

But there was a better answer.

Word. It is a good series.

Agreed. A beautiful series of many important firsts for me personally. (Let's not talk about Uru. Or End of Ages.)

[Picture is the cover image of the videogame Riven, the sequel to Myst. In the image it's nighttime, and a rock-like spherical structure with glowing windows on its surface stands on top of what seems a tree trunk with its roots showing, and this tree stands a little hard rock on the edge of what seems like the sea, with a cliffside right behind it.]

I still think this is the best series ever made.

I've been trying to play these fucking games for about a year now, without success. I torrented Myst and acquired Riven, Exile, and Revelation on CD-ROM and couldn't install any of them. My computer's CD-ROM drive is... volatile, but since I couldn't get the first game to work via mounting (which I've successfully done with other PC games many times) I'm wondering if it's just an issue of the first game being too old to work properly on my Windows 7, and/or all of the CDs (all pre-owned and bought at garage sales) just being too beat up to install. Anyone else run into this problem, or is it just an issue with my computer or, possibly, the CDs?

At this point, I'm just holding out hope they'll release some remastered editions that I can get new.

Gog.com puts a lot of effort into making old games compatible with new computers. I can't guarantee their versions will work, but it's a pretty good bet.

Wow, thanks! I'm checking it out right now and it looks like it's definitely a good option. $5.99 isn't a bad price tag, either.

Once upon a time, I had a copy of SimCity 2000 on CD ROM that would no longer work on new computers after a certain point, so it could just be that there is too much of a divide between the copies of the games and the computer you have.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
You can actually get them (except for Exile) via Steam, if that's an option for you.

I agree on the grounds that it was the only game series I ever even tried to play. It is gorgeous.

My god, how I loved these games.

Loved these games. Miss these games (and all the similar genre ones they spawned). These days it seems like the closest I can get to a first person puzzle-adventure is those stupid hidden object games. I want more Myst, Journeyman Project, Riddle of the Sphinx, Schism, Timelapse. I ate them up with a spoon and I can't help but think that with modern graphics and interactivity they'd be that much cooler.

This, forever +infinity!

Hey, someone else has heard of Schizm! That was one of only two games I ever stopped playing purely because it scared me--I never found out whether it even had game-overs, but the bizarre aesthetic, creepy backstory, and constant sense of looming dread made me suspect any game-overs it did have would be absolutely horrific.

(Surprisingly, the other such game was also a first-person puzzler, a rather sub-par game called The Crystal Key. In that case, I quit after I DID get an unexpectedly horrific game-over.)

I didn't play Crystal Key, but it was on my wishlist along with a host of other sub-par looking ones (I was working my way to the bottom, sort of like one does with a new fic archive...) You make me glad I didn't get around to it!

I know what you mean, searching for puzzle games just brings disappointment nowadays.

I still remember on one of the games, I think it was Exile, standing on an island at sunset, looking across to a distant thunderstorm. The lightning flashed, then there was a pause, and then you heard the thunder. Little touches like that, such a beautiful game.

Loved this series. I know Myst was rereleased on the DS, but there was something shoddy with the port.

For some reason Riven had some game-breaking glitch on my old computer that wouldn't let me progress past a certain point. I'll need to check out some Let's Plays or something.

Thanks for reminding me about these games, anon!

I loved these games because they didn't require lots of hand-eye coordination and I just played for the pretty, basically. I loved the world so much, but I just wanted to go there and play. I don't think I ever solved either game, but they meant a lot to me, and sometimes (like now) I feel very nostalgic for these games. Just...I wanted to live there, y'know? :)

I miss this series so bad! I sucked badly at the puzzle-solving but just I loved the atmosphere and the world-building so much it was still a pleasure to play and get stuck.
