I actually originally knew him from a rather cheesy Phantom of the Opera version. It always struh me he had such expressive eyes even under a mask.

I remember that one! It was the first adaption I ever saw of the book, and I'm rather fond of it still.

I'm giggling at the title of secrets link :p

Is it odd that the first thing that came into my head was that Vetinari has been played by both Rodrigo Borgia and Tywin Lannister? Apparently if you want to portray a Machiavellian tyrant, you've only got a few options.

That said, Charles Dance all the way. His Vetinari was fabulous.

Agreed. I love Jeremy Irons, but - whether it was his personal approach or the way the director told him to do it - he did not mesh well as Vetinari at all.

You have no idea how much I want Charles Dance to come back and do cameos for the Watch series if that ever gets off the ground. Ugh, it feels like forever since Going Postal came out.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-17 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I think it was that he was a bit too ... theatrical? He didn't have the deadpan sangfroid I associate with Vetinari. Plus, a death threat from Vetinari doesn't usually sound silly. I love Irons too, but that wasn't the best Vetinari I've seen, no.

Dance, on the other hand, pretty much nailed with the 'Joke' sequence. I would adore for him to come back as Vetinari.

(I would also flat adore a Watch series).

the Watch series

What? This is a Possible thing?

Don't fuck around with me woman, THIS IS AN ACTUAL THING?!

MY BODY IS READY

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It is an actual thing!
There's not been much news recently, but it is happening, and its been described as "CSI Ankh Morpork" IIRC, Pratchett and co have set up a new production company in order to make it as faithful to the book universe as they can.

He'll always be Tulkinghorn to me. Always. No matter if he's in something else that will always be the role I'll think of when I see him.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. In fact, when I saw the secret, I thought "isn't that what's-his-face from Bleak House?" (Couldn't remember the name). But Tulkinghorn was an evil soulless bastard, and I said good riddance when he died.

He totally rocked that villain role.

I actually didn't know Charles Dance had played Vetinari but that totally works when I think about it.

Charles Dance was the best Vetinari, definitely! Despite the blondness. Vetinari is my favorite, so I was very pleased with him. :)

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
He's a ginger, actually :)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Loved him in The Golden Child as Sardo Numspa as well as Benedict in The Last Action Hero! He did a nice job as Thomas in Underworld Awakening, despite the terrible script/premise,

I'll have to search for the Phantom piece. Thanks!

I saw him first in the Golden Child when I was a very little kid... and he scared the hell out of me even before the demonic transformation XD I thought it was only fair to find him play two of my favorite characters (Vetinari and Erik) and do it so very well!

[Picture is of actor Charles Dance playing Havelock Vetinari in the two-part television adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Going Postal. He is a very elegant looking older gentleman.]

Going Postal is the only thing I have seen Charles Dance in, and I'm not interested in seeing him in anything else.

But I still like and reblog gifs and photosets of him from other things (particularly Game of Thrones, there's a lot of that on my dash).

b!s: this man will forever remind me of the sexual frustration I feel in relation to Lord Vetinari

This is what Vlad Masters from Danny Phantom wanted to look like.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Charles Dance... Phwoar. I love him so much! Hits quite a few buttons - English, older, talented, smart, gorgeous, prefers younger women... (He dated Sophia Myles when she was in her early 20s, and dated another woman who was 35 to his 61.)

Every episode of GoT, I keep repeating the riff, "Outta the way, I'm gonna go sleep with Sigourney Weaver."

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
My first encounter with him was 'The Last action hero' where he played the baddie opposite Arnie.

"Hello? I've just killed someone and it was Quite deliberate"

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
He sucked substantially less than Jeremy Irons, that's for sure, but he still wasn't how I picture Vetinari.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
He was a superb Vetinari. He might not have looked like book!Vetinari, but his gestures, his voice ... I don't think I can ever see anybody else in that role now. Damn hot!
