How was this franchise? The trailer for the most recent one looked vaguely interesting, but I confess that if I were to watch them, it would be mostly to look at Vin Diesel. Are they entertaining? Are there any that I should skip? (I ask you because you've clearly seen enough of them to have comically exaggerated shipping opinions.)

I'm gonna jump in and say I think they're entertaining as hell. Except for 2 & 3. Skip those and watch the rest.

2 and 3 suck, but they do establish a couple of important characters/plot points for the later (better) movies.

I say watch them all just once, but brace yourself the laughably bad writing/acting of 2 and 3.

True enough. I just like to pretend that what happens in 3 didn't actually happen.

I tried to watch 3, but I had to give up about partway through; it just wasn't the same without Paul Walker. :(

Throwing in my two cents because I love these movies...

I haven't seen the latest yet, but I've seen the rest, and I enjoyed them all on different levels. The primary storyline around Diesel is concentrated in the first, fourth, and fifth (and ostensibly sixth) movies, with the other two movies (2 Fast 2 Furious and Tokyo Drift) only featuring Diesel's character in cameos. Those movies introduce several great (IMO) characters who return in five and six, and some important storyline progression in 2 Furious, but they're widely considered the weakest entries, so really, you can skip them and the wiki summaries will catch you up fine.

The franchise is definitely not what you would call smart and original, but it is incredibly fun. If you like great cars crashing into stuff, heist/robbery/crime tropes played straight, completely outlandish action scenes, a racially diverse cast that traverses a bunch of countries, an emphasis on the importance of family and friendship, and Vin Diesel being hot and taciturn all over your eyeballs, I heartily recommend it. The main downside for me is the main female characters are really cool (especially Lettie, OTP, insanenoodlyguy) but really sidelined and occasionally objectified, but you can't win 'em all.

Given that this was the only thing that got me through The Chronicles of Riddick, I may have to check out these movies. You do make them sound appealing in other respects (except for the sidelining of female characters -- I can forgive a fair bit of objectification as long as the women get to DO THINGS), though.
