Spider bite?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-17 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yesterday, I got two bug bites on my arm, which at first looked like mosquito bites. They got bigger, though, until they basically became one big swollen itchy lump on my arm. None of the lotions I've put on mosquito bites to stop the itchy have done anything, but ice and cold water seem to help.

Is this a spider bite? I've had them before, but they never got this swollen. I'm a little freaked out because I googled "spider bite" to see if I could figure out if this was one, and got a bunch of pictures of really poisonous spider bites with necrotic flesh and giant holes in people's body parts... I don't have that, obviously, but I don't know if those would start out as something like what I do have before getting really nasty?

The necrotic flesh happens pretty fast. Unless you were bitten by say s brown recluse, I think you're fine. If it doesn't go down, you might want to have it looked at.

Go to the doctor. And if you don't have insurance, check out the free clinic. You don't mess around with insect bites. It could be as simple as having an allergic reaction or an infection, which some cheap anti-biotic or anti-histamine might clear it up.

But go.

Worry if it looks a target. Otherwise it's probably OK.

If you're having an allergic reaction, take some benadryl to stop/reduce the reaction.

Also, mix up 50% water and 50% Listerine to help kill the itchy skin on the outside.

If it's developing into sores, all try dabbing and covering the sore w/milk of magnesia (it's an old-time medical trick--they used to use it on bedsores, etc. My vet learned it from a nurse and swears by it on sores on her horses and other animals she's treated.).

It could still be a mosquito bite. I used to have the normal reaction to mosquito bites (itchy for a while, then fades), but in the last two years, it's like my body has used up all my tolerance for them. Even if you don't scratch, they swell up like crazy (quarter-size sometimes), and they itch horribly for days (and no, the Afterbite doesn't work). Over two or three days, they slowly recede into a small itchy lump that eventually disappears.

I hate it. My only solutions are lots of bug spray, and longer sleeves when possible. Also, running and swatting.

It could be a spider bite, but it's also entirely possible it's just an allergic reaction - and yeah, the allergy can develop quite suddenly. I used to only get your standard reaction to bug bites, now I have a more intense reaction - the last time I got bitten by a sandfly, the swollen patch was four inches across. Try an antihistamine, and see if it changes at all?
