It's fiction about the Christian (specifically Catholic, as it includes Purgatory) afterlife. The "canon" for Christianity is the Bible -- where did you think the word "canon" came from? Ergo, it is Bible fanfic. Nothing trolly about that. Milton's Paradise Lost is Bible fanfic too. Perhaps even more directly, since it's based specifically on Genesis.

You do realize, don't you, that The Divine Comedy used aspects of the Bible, The Aeneid (Particularly Book VI), Aristotle's work, and Cicero's work? Dante, as a Christian, found the Bible to be truth. (Whether you believe this or not, isn't relevant to the argument) and you don't write "fan fic" about the truth. No one calls a history textbook "fan fic", nor a term paper "fan fic". This is a combination of Dante's belief and study emerging in literary genius. How is this fan fic if Doctor Zhivago isn't fan fic about the Russian Revolution and Civil War? Is it because it has to be based upon written text? See my response about Dante believing the Bible to be truth and it contains a history of a religion and peoples. There are texts written about the Russian Revolution.

(It was also a way for him to get back politically at his enemies, like the Pope.)

I will grant that fan fic has a loose definition at times (historical fiction, for example) but it's absurd to call this stuff "fan fic". It's just a way of insulting a work.

There is a Dante fandom, so why not just use that as the basis for your fandom secret and just say what you don't like about the Divine Comedy?

I'd respect your opinion more if you didn't have such a farcical way of expressing it.

History texts/term papers are not fanfic because they are documents recording a specific series of events which are proven to have happened. They can become fanfic when those series of events are portrayed in such a way that paints historical events as being more favorable toward the country where those texts were written. IE, the lack of including certain people in history who had pivotal roles in wars so that your country looks better.

Dante's Inferno qualifies as fanfiction in the exact same way that Wicked is fanfiction. They are simply fanfiction that has been accepted as expansive literature. And in the same way that technically speaking, the New Testament is fanfiction of the original Torah of the Jewish people.

Fanfiction is simply taking a preexisting storyline and expanding upon it when you are not the original author of the story. Regardless of whether the author later says 'That's exactly what happened', it's still fanfiction. Because the original author didn't write it, and did not contract YOU to write it.

Dante held that Christianity was truth. However, he self-inserted his own avatar into an epic tale where he gets to buddy buddy with his idol and tromp through a Hell of his own description that was based on the Hell presented by scripture. Regardless of his intent for the story to mean, whether as wish-fulfillment or revenge or both, this qualifies as fanfiction because he is neither God nor one of the authors whose letters and articles make up the Christian Bible.

Fan fic is meant to play with/pay homage to/otherwise engage with the work for fun

That's not what Dante did or what he wanted to do.
