I won't stop watching, but GOOD LORD I so don't want a female Doctor. Nope no no no no nope no.

It'll never happen tho, so whatever.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not?

Why won't it happen?

Well the BBC execs won't want a female Doctor because they thing little boys can't relate to women and boys are a demographic they don't want to lose.

Why don't I want it to happen?

Well.

The canon has always been kind of shaky as to whether the Doctor remains the same person or not across regenerations. If the Doctor is in fact the same person, then regardless of whether he regenerates into a female body, he'd still be a man. Sex is not the same thing as gender.

Theoretically though, the show could say that the Doctor is gender fluid, I suppose. But I'm sure that'd be a mess.

Or I suppose you could go with the idea that the Doctor is NOT the same person across regenerations, but you'd have to establish that pretty firmly, imo.

I hadn't even thought about it like that, but that's a ridiculously good point.

It's also ridiculously easy to handwave, as the doctor is not human and gender/sex could work differently for time lords - especially if they have the ability to regenerate into bodies of both genders.

I think that's a major copout though.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
At this point a lot of the 'explanations' on Doctor Who are total copouts, so *shrug*. I don't think a woman doctor will ever happen though, so it's probably moot.

If we were talking novels, I'd agree. On a TV show, with human actors playing the characters, gender and sex are still going to read the way they do for humans, and I think a variation from that would require a lot of explanation.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
But I thought they did say that the Doctor is not the same person? I mean, his personality changes pretty drastically - I only saw transition from nine to ten, but wasn't the Doctor himself curious what kind of a person he would turn out to be this time around?

(I once read somewhere that this is sort-of the nature vs nurture thing - the "nurture" aspect of himself doesn't change, because why would it, but his basic nature does. But I'm not sure where and how long ago, so.)

RTD tended to frame regenerations like the death of a person. But it varies depending on the showrunner.

Like some fans got REALLY annoyed at RTD for how he framed Ten's regeneration because Ten didn't want to go and he viewed regeneration as death.

So yeah, it's not something that really has a solid consensus in canon or in fandom.

RE Nature vs. Nurture,

It's kinda the opposite I think. Nine was all broody and needed Rose's wide-eyed wonder and innocence about the universe to bring him back from the post-Time War dark place that he was born in. Ten was born in a war too but Rose/The Bad Wolf was his mother so he struggled with the balance between serious human emotion and all the intensity of the Time Vortex/Heart of the TARDIS. After all of Ten's pain, Eleven is born and he's just so happy to be alive. He's full of wonder and excitement and he's looking for family instead of running from it like Ten did, but there's still that darkness underneath because he's still the Lonely God, after all.

So it's kinda the circumstances under which each incarnation is 'born' that feeds into their personality (according to NuWho anyway).

Whether you like it or not, it's canon that Time Lords can and do change gender when regenerating. Or look like a completely different species.

There was an offhand comment about the Corsair in "The Doctor's Wife", but other than that, I can't think of other established Time Lord characters that have changed gender. Romana, the Doctor and the Master have all remained consistent with their gender.

I mean, it's possible that the Corsair is gender fluid.

And theoretically the Doctor could be gender fluid even though he hasn't been shown to be such up to this point.

But if you think that the Doctor becoming a woman would be anything other than "female body parts = I'm a woman now! LOL BOOBS!" then you're kidding yourself.

The Doctor, or Time Lord in general, might not have a gender identity at all. I don't see why 'oh! Female body parts! Interesting ..." wouldn't be perfectly fine.

I agree that Moffat screwing it up would be the most likely course of events, unless maybe they cast an actress who would force him out of his usual masturbation fantasy mode when writing women. But I don't see why it would have to be an exploration of gender identity. Just assume Time Lords are sufficiently different from us and be done with it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Really. After all the times he's referred to "what kind of a man" he is. Not what kind of person. What kind of man.

And when did they ever say he could regenerate as a different species? You really think he's going to turn into an Ood?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
When Romana regenerated back in the classic series she was able to "try out" a few bodies including an alien form before settling on the naughty school girl look.. All female though.
lex_antonia: (Default)

[personal profile] lex_antonia 2013-06-19 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That doesn't mean Time Lords have a gender identity the way humans do. If it works for Trills, it can work for Time Lords.

Romana.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
But the Doctor's personality changes pretty drastically each regeneration, even if his memories and lots of his passions remain the same. I don't see why his gender couldn't change.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. This is a point that needs to be spread around. The Doctor seems to have always identified as a man, so there's no reason to be gender fluid.

I'm afraid to even bring this up on my own journal, at risk of being called some kind of privileged cis-gendered sexist.

Thank you, you put into words what I've wanted to say all along. If the Doctor is a man, putting him in a female body will just make him a trans man, and lord do I not trust anyone involved with DW now to write that, particularly not Davies or Moffat.

It's really not the same as having the Doctor regenerate as a black man or other MOC, which would be fucking awesome and should happen soon.

I only want a lady Doctor if she's a cool old lady. Like Helen Mirren or Judi Dench or someone like that.

No particular reason.

My SO and I were talking about this last night and these were our top two picks, too.

I'd throw another Dame in there - Dame Maggie Smith. I'd watch the fuck out of Doctor Who if the Doctor was Professor McGonagall.
