Heh, as someone who's been a fan of Who since about the end of the Third Doctor/beginning of the Fourth, this is so patently ridiculous!

Doctor Who didn't start with 'pretty men'. Some of us just don't feel that it's ever been established in canon that a Time Lord could regenerate into a different gender. Every Time Lord or Time Lady that's ever been show to regenerate on the series has stayed the same. I'm personally tired of seeing fifty years of canon hand-waved away for the sake of shoddy/shock storytelling. If people want a female Time Lady so bad, why not find an excuse to bring back Romana or the Rani?

It doesn't matter if the show didn't start with "pretty men". The New Who brought in a whole new slew of people who had never seen doctor who before, and most never do watch the original.

So a lot of the teenage and 20-somethings that are into New Who are up in arms over the Doctor being a woman because, yes, they want to fangirl over the menz.

(And then self insert on the companions as they're always female).

And I'm sure there's a mix of homophobia in there too.

Doctor Who might not have started with pretty men, although Hartnell in his younger days was no dog, but it may come as a surprise to a lot of current fans that Pertwee, Tom Baker, and Peter Davison were all considered a bit sexy. Pertwee in his first two seasons was very much an early 70s Sex Symbol, the same with Tome Baker (well, mid seventies sex symbol when it was all going a bit woods-and-forest-countryside-chic) and Peter should need no explanation. Yeah, I know standards on pretty boy have changed over the years, but they were once the "in" looks.

Pretty boy has been a large part of the Doctor Who formula from early on.

I suppose I should mention McGann here too, he was what they thought a byronic hero was in the 90s. Velvet and long hair.
