I came across a pretty decent Will/Hannibal fic today and when I went to leave a review noticed that there was a super long thread in the comment section. Curious, I checked it out. Turns out some reader was butthurt about the author not warning about the non-con (it was on AO3 and the 'author chose not to archive warnings' or something).

Anyway, I was seriously surprised. I mean, it's a canon-based Hannibal/Will and the author clearly tagged it as a dark fic. What the heck did you expect?

If you go into reading a non-AU Hannibal/Will fic not expecting the worst, then there's something seriously wrong with you. Non-con should be the least of your worries. I'd be more concerned by the fact that one of the main characters is going around killing people, chopping them up, and eating them. D:

Yeah, yeah, I know, everyone has different triggers, but if you decide to read a fic where the author chose not to archive warnings, then it's your own damn fault for reading something you didn't like.

I think you have to keep in mind that this is a fandom where some people don't understand and/or are legitimately surprised by the idea that Hannibal/Will is not a consensual lovey-dovey relationship.

As much as I'd LIKE to think most people realize how fucked-up it is... there are people who ship it for the fluff.

Also, warning for non-con is a pretty standard thing now in fanfic. Along with character death & spoilers.

It is, but the "choose not to warn" option is a catchall warning that there may or may not be disturbing/triggering material, so read at your own risk. So the story author covered their ass, warning-wise.

From what I've heard, this is a fandom in which people don't actually know that Hannibal is eating/serving humans so I don't think anything should surprise you.

*gapes* Are you serious? I don't participate in the fandom much so I had no idea. But I mean, really now? HOW???

It's not that bad, really.

The vast majority of the fandom are fully aware of what the show is about and how dark it is.

But there IS a small minority of stupid people, (as you get in every fandom), who expressed surprise when Hannibal betrayed Will.

Like they expected it to end with a happy murder family or something? LOLNO.

I suspect these people may have been recent migrants from other, morre light-hearted fandoms, which have a tendency to assume that the OTP is canon.

wanting and expecting are two different things, anon. The difference is a tinhat and a river in Egypt.

I want Hannibal to cuddle Will back to happiness too (and then they can murder together), but to expect that would be silly :P

Um, yeah that's the minority. I think we all mostly know that everything he makes is human. The lettuce is human.

Choose Not to Warn is a valid warning. The reviewer is obviously a moron.
