I didn't start watching for George either (I started because Vikings are AWESOME), but he is definitely essential. I am interested to see how it works for him to become more of a Viking while holding on to his faith, and I hope it's written well. But yeah the fact that we're sitting here talking about how we're worried about his faith when the show's been off the air for weeks and weeks says something about the connection the character made with his audience ;)

So true! Hopefully they realize Athelstan is a huge fan favorite and that the show itself benefits greatly from his involvement; not just because of the fans either, but from what the character brings to the show. I don't want him going anywhere anytime soon, and the show wouldn't be the same without him so I think killing him off is kind of risky.

(All the time-skips worry me too though, because they allow the show to completely bypass certain issues that NEED to be addressed. And Travis makes it sound like those are going to be common again, so...blerg. They better give Athelstan's storyline the depth it deserves!)

Agreed 100%. They had no idea that he was going to blow up in popularity, obviously, but it seems like they figured it out pretty quickly considering they make sure George is with them for all their press stuff.

Based on the length of George's hair right now it looks like the season is going to START with a damn time jump :\ Those are what started the breakdown of the first season so that depresses me. I want to SEE how Ragnar and Lagertha come to terms with Gyda's death, how Athelstan is dealing with being spared when so many died instead, how Bjorn manages with Aslaug... but what do you want to bet they drop us into the story right before/right after Aslaug has her baby, after Lagertha and Ragnar have been estranged for months? And we never get to see anything.

Oh god, yes. Things were better before the constant time-skips started and the show skipped golden opportunities for character development.

but what do you want to bet they drop us into the story right before/right after Aslaug has her baby, after Lagertha and Ragnar have been estranged for months? And we never get to see anything.

That is probably exactly what will happen and it's a damn shame. SO MUCH WASTED POTENTIAL!
