Well, it's not always to be 'cool' and it could be simply because - at some point - it was needed for some reason. For example, the state I live in has about 2/3rds of the population speak Spanish [a large chunk of which only speak Spanish] and even more people who come up from Latin America for vacation/shopping/etc. So most people will pick up enough to at least hold short conversations/the polite inquires bit, and you'll always be able to find someone whose fluent around to translate if you really need it.

Seeing as India was a English colony, I can see how everyday words would end up getting adopted simply because they were going to need to communicate with the English for a variety of reasons [business, the fact the british controlled the government, etc] and once the British left...it probably became something of a mix between 'Already so ingrained' and 'crap shoot' as to what stuck around. At least, that's how it seems to me, but I really don't know. ^^;;
