I've heard as well that English is considered trendy, so I think many young people especially like to use the English loan version of a word rather than an old-fashioned Japanese synonym, but that can also be put down to globalization.

From what I hear English isn't that "trendy" but people are forced to study it for their career because society says it'd be important to know English.　
Of course there are people who really like English and the "cute" English teachers too ;)
I personally am amazed how so many English teachers can come and live here. I would never teach English in Japan.
