She made bad decisions late in life. With a surprisingly cute outcome!

He might be adopted.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
But...aren't there like, ten more of him that all look the same and have the same colors and design as Mrs. Potts?

And here I am, asking myself about tableware adoption.

Honestly I always wondered about all the other plates and dishes and glasses and silverware. There were literally hundreds of them in Be Our Guest, even taking into consideration his status as a prince it really didn't seem like there should've been that many culinary-focused servants in the castle.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, maybe only some of them were actual humans and the others were just magical spoons and plates and shit.

Yeah, I'm going to go with this. If the object didn't have a speaking part, I'm assuming it was a regular object that had majiked into sentience.

CHIP'S BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND FRIENDS TURNED BACK INTO REGULAR CUPS. HOW'S THAT FOR CHILDHOOD TRAUMA?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
When they turned back into humans the many brothers were gone! There was just Chip. It all makes sense now.

I call my grandmother 'Mama.' Could just be that.

Brothers, and sisters do get mentioned so he may have just been the youngest in a large family. fairy tale or not, BatB does seem to be set in a time where people had a lot of kids.

Foxy granny teapot!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
When I was a kid I was SO confused about this. Grandma or mother?! I still can't decide.

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-06-20 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Mrs. Potts, a talking teapot, speaking with her son Chip, a talking teacup, while Cogsworth, a small talking pendulum clock, looks on fondly. They all have human mouths and eyes. They were human servants working in a castle who were cursed to transform along with their master, from the Disney animated film "The Beauty and the Beast".]

Mrs. Potts always seemed more of an age to be Chip's grandmother than mother to me

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
"They all have human mouths and eyes" made me laugh for some reason haha.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think I always assumed he was really the oldest teacup daughter's kid but nobody talks about it. Sure, Mrs. Potts is his 'mother'...

Not that, uh, cartoon teacups really need a realistic explanation, but during the time when Beauty and Beast took place, the rate of children born to women in their mid-late 40s was exponentially greater than it is today (http://humupd.oxfordjournals.org/content/11/3/261/F3.expansion.html). Why? In modern times, women get tubal ligations when they're done having children, which is generally in their 20s-30s, or use birth control carefully after that. Before those things were possible, every time you had sex you risked getting pregnant, right up until menopause. Back in that time, a woman in her 50s with very young children of her own would have been quite commonplace.

This. I always figured he was a change-of-life baby.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
There's always been birth control. Not as reliable as big pharma but it was out there. Mrs. Potts looks 60, not 40, even for back in the day. She had a fairly cushy position, she wasn't a field laborer.

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-06-21 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but unreliable birth control results in a ton of pregnancies. And if she had a child in her mid-late-40s, she'd be in her 50s now, not "40". Do people with cushy positions never have sex?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps anon above means that she hasn't worked hard enough to age prematurely, not that people with cushy positions don't have sex.

Ngl when I was young, I thought he was an orphan and that Ms. Potts adopted him. He was aware of this, but still called her "mama", because she had raised him.

Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally think that's because she's Angela Lansbury.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
There are documentated cases of women naturally conceiving children after the age of fifty. It's not impossible.
