If we aren't allowed to use the Japanese names for items originating in Japan, what are we supposed to call bonzai plants, sushi, kimono, shiba-inus, etc etc?

There aren't cherry trees in Japan only? So why would you need to call a cherry tree in your home country Sakura?
Shiba is Shiba, Kimono is Kimono. But I don't call a cherry tree in Germany Sakura, I call it Kirschbaum.

But it has a name in European languages
I really don't get it

Japanese small tree, Japanese raw fish meal, Japanese robe dress, Japanese dog....

I can understand it for bonsai, sushi and kimono, which are very culture-specific, but we're talking about a tree that grows all over the world. You don't walk into McDonalds and order a Big Mac with a large pommes-frites, do you?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-19 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
okay I can't lie, I got so used to ordering from McD in Japan that I still have a hard time saying fillet of chicken and not chicken frayo.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
what the hell is a chicken frayo

are you just butchering what is really just "chicken filet-o"? because that's what it is in Japan.

down boy!

Yes, I do. ;P

Eh, if it's for a Japanese variety of cherry trees, I can see it as quick-n-dirty shorthand.

I do, but that's because that is the word for fries in German ;)

So do I, because it is the word for fries in Norwegian too, though I suspect we pronounce it slightly differently :)

Cherry trees have cherries. Sakura don't, and they have a ton more blossoms than a fruit-bearing tree.
