I guess it's more simple, but it's not very precise. Japan has hundreds of different varieties of cherry blossoms. It'd be a bit like calling all roses "Mister Lincoln roses".

Yes, I know. But it still worked to differentiate them and garner interest. Kind of like how most people outside of Japan refer to anything with raw fish as "sushi".

That makes sense for most people. People with an interest in sushi know that the "sushi" refers to the vinegared rice and that raw fish by itself is sashimi. That's why I thought gardeners would be more precise in their terminology, they're not "most people".

If by gardeneres you mean botanists... a gardener has a different skill set.
