I insist on calling the Washington monument an Egyptian obelisk (or Greek ὀβελίσκος for the same logical reason. I'm not pretentious, it's just that they're Egyptian, so...

(I'm kidding.)

Um. I actually do call it an obelisk, or the Washington obelisk. Because, well, it is one.

(I'm not American, for the record).

but the washington monument IS called an obelisk ... because that's what it is...? the lincoln memorial is called a temple too. them being memorials doesn't stop them being what they are (just like there being other species of cherry trees does't mean the pink flowering japanese cherry tree should never be called sakura)

I thought something had to be a place of worship before it was considered a temple? I know the Lincoln Memorial is modelled on the architecture of the Greek Doric temples, but I didn't think that actually made it a temple itself?
