Pep talk needed
(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 01:07 am (UTC)(link)I have finally finished my doctoral thesis after an unholy number of years of misery and angst and many colourful mental breakdowns. I can submit it for final checks by my prof as soon as I write the abstract. Literally just 300 words describing the thesis. I've been staring at a blank screen for an hour already. OMFG if I can get this done tonight my life can begin again.
Anything you can throw at me to get me motivated would rock, guys. Music, gifs, mantras - what would you do to make yourself write those last paltry 300 words?

Try this for "I am awesome and powerful and can do anything" music.
For practical advice, try just opening a notepad doc and just start describing your thesis -- not trying to write the actual abstract yet, but just putting words next to each other that say what your thesis is about. Then you can use some of what you come up with there to put your abstract together later, after you get a glass of water or a snack or something.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 01:14 am (UTC)(link)I have no tips on how to properly write an abstract, but the many that I've seen (which are many) tend to follow the pattern of a middle-schooler's Science Fair entry form: Hypothesis, Experiment, Conclusion. But most of the papers I deal with are science ones, so that mightn't be helpful to you.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 04:22 am (UTC)(link)Like some people said, do a first draft, just to get all the needed ideas out without worrying about the order, or style, or specific word usage, etc.; and then you can rewrite it to your heart's content.
