The bit with the sick girl and her parents made me actively cry, largely because of how delicately they handled it. They didn't need to give you the backstory of this family, or really any dialogue at all. The actors conveyed the whole situation perfectly with, what, two lines of dialogue from the father and none from the mother? That's a well-done scene by any definition I've heard.

DA - I also thought that Pike's death scene was really well done, along with Kirk begging for the lives of his crew. Those scenes had a definite emotional punch. I'm also personally of the opinion that the scene with Kirk and Spock was switched up enough to be its own thing, but I can see why some people thought it was too derivative.
