Why is it so polarising? I mean I'm enjoying it, it's a good book and I'm certainly gonna check out something else of his (about halfway through at this point). I've no idea why some are taking issue with me starting with this one :S It's just a story like any other.

It's not I don't want to, I just couldn't get hugely excited as someone with no idea what it's about? But I'm glad I did. It's proving to be enjoyable, I've pissed off an anti-hipster anon and thanks to my secret I now know a TV show is coming out that I'll probably never watch but will think about anyway.

Ah sandman is another one I've been curious about! Except at the time the library wouldn't let me take it out cause I was under 18 >:( haha, i have control of my library card now and can get whatever I want!

HOLY *$&% WHAT!

Is that a PUBLIC library? Because that crap is straight-up illegal and WRONG, if it is. If that is a public library, run by the freaking city or state for public use, they have no freaking right to restrict what books anyone is allowed to check out.

I've checked out Saw movies to ten year old kids. I hate doing it. But we're a public library. If a kid grabs Azzarello's Joker, I can't say "boo" about it unless their guardian is there and actually asks my opinion of the thing.

Yikes.

Um. Anyway. I have no idea why AG is so polarizing. I really enjoyed it, though what I generally like about his writing includes a certain "English"-ness that even Gaiman says is toned down for AG. It's just that is seems people either really like the book or really hate it--the marmite of Gaiman books. The only real complaint I've heard anyone say is that they hated getting all these glimpses of other people's stories that we weren't going to see all of, and that Gaiman could've milked each one for its own book, but, eh, that's pushing it, I think. Could just be some folks don't like it.

But yeah, glad you're enjoying it, then.

OP

Yeah it was a public library, but I'm in Australia so maybe the rules are different? Basically until I was 18, there were some books I'd take up and the Librarians would be "no." Some librarians who knew me may say yes depending on the book but I guess this one is not? IDK why, the only thing I see so far could be the (minor) sex parts?

Then once there was a librarian who said after I was 18 I could check out (some Stephen King book) and I went two days after my birthday and she STILL SAID NO >:[ I was so mad because they let me have Misery but not...jee I've forgotten now, but my mum went and got it out for me instead.

I guess so XD I mean I'm enjoying it quite a lot, but not enough to go have strong opinions on it. Maybe there's a silent middle line of "yeah it was nice" people XD XD

Yes, I am enjoying. It's always nice when a book works out :D

Ack, I'm sorry, I committed Stupid American Fallacy #338: Assuming everyone else online is in America. My bad.

Sandman has a wee bit more than some minor sex parts. There are some legitimately disturbing and graphic sequences that stay with you. All part of a great story, but on a personal level, it's something I tried to keep my siblings from reading until they were a bit older (though not 18). I just itchy when I hear about it being a government library making those calls, although yeah, America's got different laws regarding those sorts of things, I think.

Weird about Misery. Also weird--I think most Stephen King stuff is considered to be at a 5th grade reading level, according to our AR stats.
