Ah, ok, yeah, that makes sense. If the length of the book is a positive point for you, then go for it! It's a book that I love and I hope you do too.

(And for added hipster-points, I recommend A Study In Emerald, which is so far my absolute favourite by Gaiman (haven't read The Ocean at the End of the Lane yet). It has Sherlock Holmes and Lovecraftian horrors in it! What could be MORE hipster? ;D )

The reason why I was a bit puzzled at your choice was because American Gods is definitely not the easier of Gaiman's book to read, and it definitely has that thing where most people will either really love it or hate it with every fibre of their being. It's also really long. But if it's what suits you better, don't even pay attention to me and enjoy yourself!
