Word.

Erm
I kind of want to say something because Tamaki is one of my favorite characters ever, but it seems your issues with him are rather... personal.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-20 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
How does it sound? Sounds relatively reasonable to me. Tamaki is not a thoughtful person and in real life is not nearly as awesome to be in a relationship with as the show makes it seem.

Okay, I suppose you sound a little angry. XD

This. It's kinda like how it's hilarious when cartoon characters hit each other over the head with mallets, and less so in real life.

[Picture is of Tamaki, a character from the anime Ouran High School Host Club. He is blonde and has purple eyes.]

I hate Tamaki more than any other character in the history of everything because he reminds me of my father and I will never stop being furious and disgusted with TamaHaru.

It's not that I have daddy issues or anything; it's just that, knowing someone like this in real life, this kind of infantile behavior, hero complex (trying to help everyone down to the last random stranger), having no boundaries, expecting things to go the way you want them to, and being totally oblivious to the opinions of people around you, even with the best of intentions, is not cute or charming or funny to me. At all. And it pisses me off to see those traits romanticized.

Also even if Tamaki and my father were nothing alike I would still hate TamaHaru because any relationship where one character reminds the other of their dad/mom/parental unit of any kind is an enormous personal squick of mine.

Every time I think of this character I hate him and TamaHaru more to the point that it has literally ruined a show I used to love. I can't even think about Ouran without getting angry.

Secret because believe me, I know exactly how this sounds.

TamaHaru is the portmanteau of Tamaki and Haruhi. Haruhi is the protagonist of the series whom Hamaki has a crush on and he isn't afraid to let it be known. The series is a comedy and he is an oblivious romantic hero cranked up to eleven.

It's been years since I watched this and I didn't watch all the episodes, though, so I'm not sure what the "because any relationship where one character reminds the other of their dad/mom/parental unit of any kind" refers to.

A very strong parallel is drawn between Tamaki and Ranka, Haruhi's father.

I see! (That is... a little creepy, actually.)

*Tamaki. Tamaki, not Hamaki, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think... I agree? It was pretty hard to follow what the secret was saying.

IA that the Tamaki/Haruhi relationship is kind of weird and awkward with him genuinely thinking he was like a father to her.

I'm not a super expert in the show (I think I watched the series twice, never read the manga) but I always assumed that his constant decrees of how she was his "little Haruhi" and he was her "papa" had more to do with him feeling attracted/affectionate towards her- but not quite being able to reconcile the fact that it was romantic love at first- so he just sort of slapped a "protective parental love" label on it, even though it's clear (to the audience and his friends) that's not what's going on.

And having a spotty family history with father figures, he was probably also eager to prove that positive fatherly love exists in the universe- which may be why he was slow to realize his true feelings/change the label on them.

you said you know how this sounds so I won't make any remarks. I do have a question though..how did you ever enjoy this show if he's that similar to your father? you said it ruined a show you used to love, but it's not like he wasn't always there and suddenly appeared.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
(OP)

Well, it's not like I went into the show knowing how much Tamaki would remind me of my father, nor how much it would romanticize his most cringe-worthy traits, nor that they would draw such a strong parallel between Tamaki and Haruhi's dad. And I loved all the other characters and aside from Tamaki the show's sense of humor was comedy gold for me.

But you know how when you watch something, you're not analyzing it, just absorbing it and having gut-punch reactions? As I watched it, Tamaki skeeved me out but I couldn't fully elaborate why; as I got more distance from the show and took time to think about it, I kept hitting upon more and more reasons that everything surrounding his character and how he was presented just pissed me off. And it feels like the entire fandom treats him like he's this ~PRINCE CHARMING~ and the perfect human being and worst of all the ~BEST DADDY~ and that just makes me angrier.

And I know I have no right to piss and moan about what makes other people happy, and I don't "publicly" want to anyway because I know I'd get harassed and dog-piled, but between brooding about it more over time and feeling really alienated by the fandom, the negativity just kept building until Ouran wasn't fun for me anymore.

Which is sad, but what can you do. =/

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I know in fiction there is a trope where women end up with men that remind them of their fathers but Tamaki was just so similar to Haruhis dad that it ended up creeping me out a little bit.

Kyoya/ Haruhi was my OTP instead.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Kyouya/Haruhi or Mori/Haruhi for me. I'd also take Kyouya/Tamaki, Mori/Kasanoda, Kaoru/Kyouya or Hikaru/Haruhi.

Basically, I ship any combination of Kyouya, Haruhi or Mori with anyone who looks like they'd work.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Your issues with Tamaki aside, it might be kind of ironic since this is another reverse harem romantic comedy, but TamaHaru sort of ruined the show for me, too.

I don't know. It just felt like it would have been so much better if it hadn't tried so hard to drive itself into being such a shitty harem. I didn't like where it took any character's personality.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I didn't love him or anything (I'm more of a Mori fan, tbh) but I *personally* don't see what the big deal is. There are worse anime characters out there.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno...I don't get that Tamaki doesn't understand what's going on around him. It seems like he DOES understand but he just doesn't rub people's faces in it because he'd rather just make them happy. Which, c'mon, considering everything else, he's just Fruits Basket Tohru with a penis.

I also only watched the anime, I heard he's a little too committed to the "father" act in the manga. That kinda strikes me as creepy or not quite well-adjusted.

And while my heart flutters like a bird at the TamaHaru scenes in the anime, I would not mind a little Tamaki/Kyouya in my life... *goes to Google*

(It's also strangely enough one of the only times that I can actually enjoy one of Vic Mangina's performances, so there's that too I guess.)

i liked the series and the ship but i can totally understand the feeling of a fictional character/relationship being really gross/uncomfortable if it was the case irl. those weren't my problems with ouran but i've definitely had them with other series

Actually you're making a lot of sense. White Knighters are freakin' aggravating in real life, and Tamaki is pushy, arrogant, and oblivious on top of that. Yeah, he genuinely cares and wants to help people, but he's still someone I'd want to smack over the head repeatedly.
quietdragon: (Tamaki; THE HORROR)

[personal profile] quietdragon 2013-06-21 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't his behaviour due to having a horribly messed-up family life himself, though? With his grandmother separating him from his mother, even though she genuinely loved him, and his father... just not caring.

Such that he couldn't actually recognize the different kinds of affection or even differentiate between romantic or parental affection?

I've heard this is shown more in-depth in the manga, while the anime just hints it with that marriage Tamaki was essentially forced into.

EDIT: But yeah, there's no doubt his behaviour in and of itself is problematic and there were at least two incidents that I would have found ridiculously unsettling in real life.

I keep wanting to watch this show. I have the box set. I know it's something that I should find hugely entertaining. But Tamaki is the reason I haven't been able to watch it all the way through. I imagine he must be 10000% more irritating if he reminds you of stuff that's hard to deal with about your dad. So I don't think you're too angry, OP.

…And I didn't know that about Tamaharu. Gross.

Although I have an incest squick in general so I also find the twincest pair just…stupid and icky rather than cute or hot or funny. Bleh.
