The show employs a genius food stylist (you can see her work on her blog: [SPOILERS FOR TONIGHT'S EPISODE OMG IN THE TOP POST] http://janicepoonart.blogspot.com/ ), and the OP of this secret must have a really really shitty monitor. That has to be it.

Or sometimes people have a different opinion from you.

DA

I see what you mean--most of those dishes aren't boring. They all look pretty disgusting to me, but they aren't boring.

Not the OP but I do tend to agree with the opinion. I've seen similar posts on tumblr and it always makes me shake my head a bit. I've worked in the food industry (in high-end restaurants and for caterers) and I don't find the dishes all that appealing. Visually interesting, perhaps? But from a culinary aesthetics standpoint, I find them too over-the-top and just... far too busy to look all that appetizing. I guess I thought the intent was for them to look somewhat disturbing - like there's something about them that's just indefinably 'off'.

Yeah, see, that actually does look all unappetizing and oddly-washed-out, color-wise, to me. Maybe part of that is that when it comes to a set plate, I'm used to the way my mom serves food, and she's all about making sure there's a lot of color on a plate. But I think, and I could be wrong here, but I think that's the point.

Like, saying that the food looks unappetizing and odd isn't saying the food stylist isn't doing her job. It's saying that her job in Hannibal is different than the job most food stylists have making you want to get chicken and a milkshake, or just making the food on set look normal (and also be something actors can eat during takes if necessary). Seems to me that the kind of story Hannibal is would lend itself toward the food being very elaborate, but just slightly unpleasant, even if it's just a subconscious reaction to it.

That's just my guess from the food. I haven't seen Hannibal. Cannibalism's a bit of a squick for me, so I'm trying to work up the stomach for it.

Eh, tbh I don't think most of the stylist's stuff looks that appetizing either, though not for the same reasons as OP. It all seems rather too artsy and pretentious for stuff that's meant to be eaten, if not off-puttingly weird.
