I have to apologize to Glorfindel fans but I really think his appearance in the FotR film would have made it worse; he has no storyline relevance after that. Anyway, I always thought he was much more interesting in the First Age. If they ever make an adaptation of the Fall of Gondolin, sign me up :P

You have a point...

Arwen made more sense imo because she was actually going to stick around.

If they ever make an adaptation of the Fall of Gondolin, sign me up :P

I'd watch it!

Yeah if they hadn't built up her character and gotten us invested in their romance, we'd have got to the end of RotK and been like, "Okay, and now he's going to marry Eowy--wait, who's that?!"
elaminator: (Lord of the Rings: Boromir - such a litt)

Haha, so true. Maybe some people didn't dig the Aragorn/Arwen romance but at least they set it up properly.

The only way Glorfindel would really work in the films is if they gave him the role Haldir had in TTT. Which would suck because he dies (again), but the intent of the Elves of Helms Deep was to replace Elrond's sending of his sons to Aragorn, so Elrond sending his best friend/second-in-command has far more resonance than Elrond sending Haldir who isn't even from Rivendell and has no connection with Elrond.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god no one would be happy if they did that! xD Anyway, that does raise an interesting point I can't believe never occurred to me: who the hell sent the Elves to Helm's Deep in the movie? Elrond's, uh, psychic conversation with Galadriel would suggest that he did, but then why would the force be led by Haldir?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, god, no. I like it better on the "succeeds in doing what they were trying to do" note, but then I'd hate it for giving Glorfindel such an inglorious end.

The original scripts had Elrond and Arwen flee to Lothlorien because Rivendell was under attack. They then convinced Galadriel and Celeborn to aid the Rohirrim. But since that was cut, they ended up with a version that makes it look like Galadriel needs her son-in-law's permission to send out her own army. :P

Well, they let him come back once... actually this is reminding me way too much of this crack fic I once read about Glorfindel having to be brought back to life again and again after dying in increasingly ignominious ways.

I never knew that! Is that the same script that had Arwen fighting at Helm's Deep by any chance? It's kind of interesting to me that, in the version they had to go with, it seemed like Elrond was the one being convinced instead.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, true - but then we'd never see it.

Yeah! Apparently she saw Aragorn dying in the Mirror of Galadriel and that was why she went to fight at Helm's Deep (in some reports, she snuck away with the army, in others she lead it). The weirdest thing about that plot is that Bilbo apparently decided to stay in the abandoned Rivendell. Yeah - and why did he need to be convinced? It's not his army that ends up at Helm's Deep.

I was thinking the same. If Jackson had done that they could've fit him and Arwen in the movies, but I don't see the point either because as you said, he would've died.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah - I only really like that idea because it honours the original intent (that of Elrond aiding the war effort) behind the Elves at Helm's Deep, and would mean we get to see him. But outside of that, it would have been a mess and probably caused intense fan backlash since I think Glorfindel is more beloved than Haldir.
