I recently posted a letter to a friend who was stressing me out with their work problems. I talked to them about my concerns as gently as I could, but they viewed the whole thing as an attack and ended our relationship.

I'm relieved. I realized after the fact that they were never really my friend. They made a lot of demands of me, whined to me incessantly, but never contacted me unless they needed something, never asked me how I was doing or what was going on in my life. I should have realized that sooner since they once got upset that I couldn't talk when they were upset at work because I was in the emergency room with my son. I'm a little upset with myself that I didn't recognize what a toxic relationship it was sooner, but so very glad it's over.

I think you might be misreading that idiom, nonny? A friend [who behaves as a friend to you when you are] in need is a friend indeed.

Yea, this. Anyone who treats you that way doesn't deserve your attention. You can do much better.

Don't be angry with yourself for realizing this now; just be glad you're now free of them and can hopefully pursue healthier relationships.

Friends like that aren't friends at all. I've had a few and all they do is drain energy from you. I'm glad to hear you've realized how toxic the friendship is and are no longer friends. Looking back, I should have cut ties with a few friends sooner, but at least they're out of my life now and yours :)

I had a clingy friend that I had been friends with since the age of 12 who became VERY CLINGY later in life, when I was about 23 or so. He lived in the apartment complex next to mine so it was very hard to put distance between us. I tried ignoring him for a few weeks and I walked home from work one day (it was dark out) to see him sitting on the bench outside and then he actually followed me in (key access only so this freaked me out) and long story short I ended up with my door deadbolted and him banging on it crying to let him in while I was embarrassed since god knows everyone on my floor could hear everything

Now he lives back in my home state and I'm almost a thousand miles away and he calls like once a month and things are fine but damn he was crazy there for a while

I guess what I'm saying is you are lucky you were even able to end the relationship, it got so bad with me I was ready to get a restraining order (which would've been pretty hard considering we lived in the middle of a city and our apt buildings were probably only 20 yards apart)
