I know. I almost feel justified in acting like an elitist now with all these other people "revolting" against the AC-only fans. XD

I've pretty much put a halt on writing fics for VII because of what's happened to the fandom. When people started telling me that my Reno was OOC, I knew that something was wrong with the fans. D: AC and the compilations really raped the characterizations... (Poor, poor Reno.)

I like game fandoms more than anime fandoms because games require you to become more engaged and think more about the characters. AC exposed FFVII to a lot of people who just wouldn't play the game to start with. It was just a given. And they're never going to really think about what the characters are really like if they don't play the game. *facepalm*

I wonder if they know just how different it is... D:

Oh, Reno. Reno. T__T I honestly DID enjoy watching AC. I still do- it's pretty, pretty fanservice, just not necessarily something I'd like to consider canon. But Reno in that movie has always made me want to punch things really hard. I was just like: "What the shit is this?" It's cute, but it's a very typical: "omg, hypercute redhead bishie looolz!" kind of thing a-and that's... uh, not at all what Reno was like in the game. Reno was a cool guy. He was smooth. He maybe thought he was a little cooler and smoother than he actually was, but still: the silly things he did in AC were more Elena's style. But where WAS Elena? OH RIGHT, OFF NOT BEING ON SCREEN BCUZ SHE IZ NO BISHIE, AND FFVII IS ONLY ABOUT BISHIES, RITE? *eyeroll* I have other problems with the compilation (MOSTLY HOJO/LUCRECIA/VINCENT BACKSTORY STUFF, UH, DoC WRY? T__T), but the Reno thing is the one that grates on my nerves. I can't even look at that famous image of him, cute as a button, sticking his tongue out without developing a twitch.

I can get just as invested in anime/book/ect. characters as I do game characters, but I do agree there is certainly something special and especially engaging about game characters. That's probably why I almost always ship canon pairings in game fandoms, when in other places I am a terribly shameless slasher- there's just something about the "connection" I form with the characters that makes me want to take everything as it is, because I spend a lot of time making things that way? I dunno, but I do understand what you're saying completely. But I think it's also because the compilation is just... presenting a very different view of the characters, possibly because it's not being written by Hironobu?

A different writer would definitely make the difference. D: It feels wrong to blame it solely on one person to me, though. I find it hard to believe that their staff all sat there and not one of them lifted a finger in objection to say "this character isn't right!" though... Who knows. All I know is that somewhere, things went horribly awry.
