(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)Gen refers to the plot and the plot is not about romance--it's not romance in that it's what the plot is about, which in a romance plot is the pairing of A & B getting together, however that is accomplished in the fic. If that's what the fic about, it's romance and belongs in the romance genre, like a romance novel in a bookstore.
However, in a gen fic, the focus is on the action. Lets say there is a murder and character A & B decide to investigate it; the focus of the story is on the murder and it's investigation.
Think of the CSI shows, they focus on the murder and investigate it and also have subplots concerning their characters and their relationships w/their coworkers, families, and spouses, but the main focus is on the murder they are investigating.
I can't imagine anyone possibly calling CSI or NCIS or shows like that romance shows; they're not romance shows, they're criminal investigative shows and their characters have lives outside the investigation. That's all.
That's why you get gen fic w/pairing labels, they're like those shows.
Frankly, I really like it when gen fic is labeled w/pairings even if it's not the focus of the fic. It lets me know better if I'll like it or not since I do mind some pairings being mentioned at all in a fic.
