Your (Wacky) Cold Remedies

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently there's a bug going around my work, and I think I caught it. Urgh. I'm at the raw throat stage right now x_x

Anyway, I have the day off tomorrow, so that gives me time to try...anything. I don't want to miss a day of work, so let me have it: your personal cold/sickness/sore throat remedies. I don't care how weird or wacky or whatever - I will do my best to try them all. Because I can. And fuck I hate being sick.

I second the gargling with hot salt water.

I have a friend who insists that drinking vinegar is the only way. Never tried it myself because ewwwwwww.

Neti pots are the shizz, though, for cold-related stuffiness. I think that's what it's called? It's a little teapot that you use to pour saline solution in one nostril and out the other :/ very strange feeling. And looking. But it works!

I don't do it anymore since I heard about people getting Naegleria fowleri from it.
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

Yeah. I ended up with 30 days of antibiotics because of a similar device. Yes I WAS sterilizing it...but IT'S PLASTIC so.

Now they're running practically 24/7 ads for HydraSense here and I just want to hurl things at the screen.

I don't think this is a standard dish in Chinese restaurants, but the one in my neighborhood has a beef-based soup with ginger, star anise, garlic and dried red peppers. One spoonful is enough to make you break out in a sweat. I normally hate hot food, but I make an exception for this soup, which I swear has nipped colds in the bud for me more than once. If you feel up to cooking, something like this might help.

Gargling salt water, drinking warm water with honey and lemon juice, drinking lukewarm water instead of cold, and taking echinacea (unless you have any auto-immune problems like rheumatoid arthritis or smthing, then don't).
starphotographs: ...I'm not that bad, though. And I don't even light things on fire! Well, not regularly... (Izaya (devious))

Drink tea with booze and honey and maybe spices and stuff.

It won't cure your cold. That is impossible.

But you'll feel better for a while. :P

Pickle juice straight from the jar can help with that sore throat. It should be sipped, not gulped, though.

eating crystallized ginger pieces, and drinking ginger tea with raw honey.
(raw honey has antibacterial properties, and ginger reduces inflammation and combats nauseau.)

Gargling lemon juice with salt, lots of salt. My voice is usually very rough for a few days after when I do this, but I think is a worthy trade-off as I only do it when I'm suffering from a throat and/or ear infection, and those usually hit me terribly.
