In slash back in the day, if you so much as mentioned an f/f or m/m pairing in your story, it had better be plainly labeled as slash and warned for, or you were in for some rather dedicated flaming. If you labeled a story gen, it had better have absolutely no mention of a slash pairing whatsoever.
In het, depending on the specific fandom, I get the impression that the definition was somewhat more flexible, up to and including "any story that isn't R or NC-17, no matter how focused on romance it may be".
