I can't speak for everyone, but I love to genderswap characters just for the sake of having female characters that don't have to deal with misogyny for once.
I like to pretend that they are respected for what they do while being female. Sometimes I just envision the genderswap world to be completely swapped in itself and women are seen as the better gender. It's nothing but compensating in my case.

This, completely. I don't change their personalities because I'm using it as escapism, and it's way too fucking depressing for me to have to go through and think "well, this wouldn't be this way and she wouldn't be like this in this situation because she was raised like this". I admit openly that it's blatant compensation, but why is that a bad thing?

While I do think it would be interesting for a "transformation" fic to for once not be solely the work of kink or fetish, and to see certain male characters deal suddenly with social issues, I don't really care about that sort of thing in straight up rule 63 versions of characters.

Especially not when the draw for me is usually seeing a female character get to occupy a role and be portrayed with a personality type that most people would otherwise not think to give her. That's the context that personally interests me.

It's the same for female characters who get swapped into male characters: a lot of the discomfort I feel about their character type and stereotyping suddenly transforms into an interesting thing to explore.

I personally don't like genderbending at all. I don't like patriarchy and i don't like matriarchy and too often the fics i used to read ( till i just stopped reading genderbending fics) had a feeling of the author thinking a male character would simply be a better character if they were female. To me, this is the same as a man thinking males are better than females. And i absolutely hate fics in worlds with a matriarchy. I read fanfiction to escape reality and i don't want to read fics with the same shit as in real life, only with a matriarchy than an patriarchy. I simply hate worlds (real life or fictionally) where one gender is praised higher than the other.

Actually, it's more a kneejerk reaction i have due to lots of genderbending fics i used to read and which often had that feeling, not to her personally. I admit i could have worded that better. I have no problem with people writing and reading them, it's just nothing i enjoy and i wanted to explain why i don't enjoy them. I feel bad reading them because it feels as if i do the same thing many men in real life do and that feels wrong.

That works as a nice fantasy, I suppose, but probably not for every fandom. Certainly not any of the ones I'm interested in, because it would take away from the harshness of the setting and the challenges the characters have to face.

But what's wrong with having a story about male characters having to face female-esque challenges, and female characters having to face male ones? Especially when there's creative logic behind how a genderswapped situation like that could come about?

Simply put, I'm thinking of a number of specific female characters I love whose challenges are intrinsically tied to the aggressively patriarchal society they live in. The way they deal with said treatment is inspiring and exactly why I love them. If they lived in a matriarchy, they would certainly face different challenges and while that could also be an interesting story, it's not their story anymore. Just a nice "what if" fantasy.

Likewise, some of my favorite male characters wouldn't face the same issues they do in their canons if they were female (due to things like being nobility in a society where titles are inherited by the males of the family).

And one of my all-time favorite characters is a male character who ends up in the "princess" role of a princess/knight-type relationship. I wouldn't be interested in the story at all if he were a woman because then it would just be your generic damsel-in-distress story. The fact that he is a man instead of a woman in that role is what makes it so interesting.

In what story does a male character occupy the "princess" role of a princess/knight relationship?

Tales of Graces! It's an RPG for the PS3. The main character is a young man who has always wanted to be a knight; he befriends the prince of his kingdom, and their relationship is central to the plot of the game. Sadly they don't take it all the way and make the relationship a romantic one (although there is very, very heavy subtext to indicate that the prince's feelings are indeed romantic), but it's still nice to see a knight and a prince instead of a knight and a princess.
