I'd honestly suggest watching certain key episodes just because they have legitimate historical significance if you're into sci fi. I consider myself a Trekkie but I haven't watched every single one.

I watched the first 2 episodes. And the Mirror Verse episode. I tried to watch more but it is so damn corny. Any suggestions of what I should watch?

I'm not the person you're replying to (obviously), but I'd recommend The City on the Edge of Forever.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I seconds that. And I'm not a huge fan of TOS. The TOS movies, I like.

The City on the Edge of Forever is hands down one of the best sci-fi episodes out there. Nothing corny about it, either.

Hey--see the anon post right below this. They pretty much hit everything I thought was important!

I'd also suggest Let That Be Your Last Battlefield and Plato's Stepchildren (first interracial kiss on US television).

I also suggest A Piece Of The Action. Why? It isn't particularly important, and it's very corny. However it features a planet made up entirely of gangsters. As in fedoras and pinstripe suits. Don't miss it.

Plato's Stepchildren is kind of an odd one because it is obviously historically important but it's not actually a very good episode and the execution of the interracial kiss is famously kind of clumsy. It's a bit strange. It's a good thing to be aware of, though.

Let That Be Your Last Battlefield is definitely one that I thought of mentioning and it's a good choice, though. Such a great combination of ridiculousness and moral messages. It's just so Star Trek.

The strange and clumsiness is why I think it's important, though. They could only accomplish that kiss in an incredibly ridiculous plotline; the fact that the first kiss happens in this way really does matter. But I'm thinking like a history geek and not a scifi geek here.

I like the fact that everybody involved made sure that the shots that didn't involve The Kiss sucked so badly that the people against The Kiss had the use the footage with The Kiss in it. I makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

I always thought that was pretty awesome too.

One of the reasons I like Star Trek is that they can have an episode featuring the first interracial kiss on American TV right alongside an episode with a planet full of 30s gangsters.

The best reason to watch TOS and the movies from it for a new fan are to get more of the jokes in the new movies. When the seatbelts showed up, for example, my friends and I laughed so hard we missed part of the dialogue.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
O_O

I have a feeling when I get around to seeing the seatbelts, I'm going to love it more than the demise of the "red shirt" in the 2009 movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
An Italian artist reviewed the movie in comic-book form.
At the end there's a vignette about the Enterprise finally getting seatbelts and nobody being thrown out of his/her seat - except Lt. Aiello, who had fake seatbelts printed on his uniform.

What everyone else said. I'd also recommend 'The Naked Time', if for no better reason than a shirtless Sulu with a sword, but I'm shallow like that.

The Corbomite Maneuver. It's a giant game of poker. And is awesome.

Miri is also really good, but kind of sad.

Other than those, everyone else pretty mentioned the good stuff.

OH!! And the Enterprise Incident. It's the first mention (i think) or Section 31, which gets mentioned in many of the other iterations of Star Trek and I THINK was even mentioned in Into Darkness, but I can't remember. I may have imagined that, I'm not sure.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah watching every single TOS episode is kind of a bad idea unless you're a completionist or are really, really into the show, but there's a few that you really should watch.

Mostly "Trouble With Tribbles", "Amok Time", "Space Seed", maybe "Balance of Terror", and, even if you don't watch any of the others, "City On The Edge of Forever." I'm not saying that you have to watch those episodes to be a fan, but you should watch them because they're good and historically important, even if TOS isn't really your bag.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Why is watching every single TOS episode a bad idea? Some people may actually like the entire TOS. You can't speak for the whole fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-25 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
The anon said unless you enjoy it. Forcing yourself to sit through everything when you don't enjoy it isn't good.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking Wink of an Eye would be a good episode to see, as well.
